If global trade were a dynamic chessboard, shipping companies would be the players making strategic moves. Pacific International Lines (PIL) recently announced an upgrade to its West Coast South America Service 6 (WS6), marking a significant strategic play in its Latin America market expansion.
The core of this upgrade focuses on route optimization and service efficiency improvements, positioning PIL more competitively in this high-stakes market. The most notable changes include adding a new weekly direct call at Mexico's Ensenada port and relocating the Chilean terminal from Valparaíso to San Antonio.
The revised WS6 route, effective April 2, 2025, will follow this port rotation: Ningbo-Shanghai-Qingdao-Busan-Ensenada-Manazanillo-Lázaro Cárdenas-Puerto Quetzal-Buenaventura-Callao-San Antonio-Ningbo. These adjustments aim to enhance cargo transport flexibility and better meet customer demands.
Long-Term Commitment to South America
William Ho, PIL's General Manager for Long Haul Trade and Route Management, emphasized the company's dedication: "The west coast of South America represents a key market for PIL, and we're particularly focused on Latin America's sustained growth potential. Since 2011, we've established a strong operational network across six countries in the region with comprehensive services."
Currently, PIL operates five routes connecting Central and South America. Three routes link the U.S. West Coast with ports in Taiwan, mainland China, and South Korea across the Pacific, while two routes connect the U.S. East Coast via the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, ultimately reaching Sri Lanka, Singapore, and China. This network provides customers with diverse shipping options throughout the region.
