What drives an airline to rapidly expand its cargo routes in a specific region? The recent strategic moves by Tianjin Cargo Airlines (TCA) in Guangzhou may reveal the answer. The carrier has officially launched the "Guangzhou-Dhaka" international freight route, operating twice weekly, marking a significant enhancement of its cargo network at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
Strategic Significance of the New Route
The launch of the Guangzhou-Dhaka route follows the IATA North Asia CARGO DAY and Guangzhou International Aviation Hub Development Conference held in June. This initiative aligns with China's Belt and Road Initiative, strengthening economic ties between China and Bangladesh. Dhaka, as Bangladesh's capital, serves as a major textile production and export hub, while Guangzhou is a critical manufacturing and trade center in China. The new route will facilitate efficient cargo transportation between the two regions, offering businesses faster and more reliable logistics services.
TCA's Growing Presence in Guangzhou
TCA has already established partnerships with global logistics leaders such as FedEx and SF Express, operating domestic routes including Beijing-Guangzhou and Chongqing-Guangzhou, with a total of 10 weekly flights. With the addition of the Guangzhou-Dhaka route, TCA now operates 12 weekly cargo flights from Guangzhou, underscoring its commitment to the region.
The airline's focus on Guangzhou stems from the Pearl River Delta's robust manufacturing and trade ecosystem, which generates substantial demand for air cargo. TCA's expansion also complements Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's vision of becoming a "global supply chain hub" and a "comprehensive international aviation gateway."
Operational Focus and Future Plans
The Guangzhou-Dhaka route primarily transports perishable goods such as seafood, garments, and mechanical components, which require timely delivery. By optimizing its Southeast and South Asia network, TCA aims to support cross-border e-commerce and bolster trade under the Belt and Road framework.
Looking ahead, TCA plans to increase its capacity in Guangzhou, further refining its route network and flight frequency. This expansion will contribute to the economic growth of the Greater Bay Area while reinforcing China's trade connections with partner countries.
