Amadeus IATA Boost Carbon Transparency for Sustainable Travel

IATA is partnering with Amadeus to integrate precise flight carbon emission data into their platform. This collaboration empowers travelers to make more environmentally conscious travel choices. By providing clear and accessible carbon footprint information, the initiative aims to drive sustainable development within the aviation industry and promote greener travel practices for consumers.

Imagine booking a flight and seeing not just the price and schedule, but also the exact carbon emissions for your journey. This vision is becoming reality through a collaboration between the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and travel technology company Amadeus, as they integrate precise emissions data directly into booking platforms.

IATA CO2 Connect: The Foundation of Accurate Emissions Data

At the heart of this initiative is IATA CO2 Connect, a system distinguished by its data accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional estimation methods, it incorporates real operational data from more than 70 participating airlines, including aircraft-specific fuel consumption metrics, using globally standardized calculation methods.

"Our partnership with Amadeus addresses passenger demand for transparency while advancing the industry's 2050 net-zero emissions goal," said IATA Director General Willie Walsh. "Our research shows nearly 90% of travelers want emissions data for their booked flights, yet 79% find current calculations inconsistent. Providing IATA CO2 Connect data through Amadeus will enable better-informed travel decisions."

ISO 14083 Certification: Standardizing Emissions Measurement

The system recently achieved ISO 14083 certification, aligning it with international standards for greenhouse gas reporting across transportation sectors. This certification provides a unified framework for emissions calculation and is expected to form the basis of the European Union's proposed "Count Emissions EU" regulation for transport emissions methodology.

"Travelers increasingly want to understand their environmental impact," said Decius Valmorbida, President of Travel at Amadeus. "This matters both for individual travelers and corporations needing to track emissions for compliance. By integrating IATA's solution, we're empowering our clients to help travelers make informed choices."

Growing Airline Participation Builds Momentum

The program continues to gain traction, with recent additions including Air India, Thai Airways, Atlas Air, and several Batik Air and Lion Air subsidiaries. With 70 airlines now participating, the project is on track to reach 100 participants by 2025.

Amadeus Platform Bridges Travelers and Sustainable Aviation

As a leading global travel technology platform connecting airlines, agencies, and corporate travel managers, Amadeus's integration of emissions data will provide comprehensive flight information that includes environmental impact metrics. This development promises to accelerate sustainable travel adoption and drive greener aviation practices.

The Significance of Emissions Transparency

Incorporating carbon data into booking processes carries multiple benefits:

Raising Environmental Awareness: Visible emissions metrics increase traveler understanding of aviation's climate impact.

Enabling Sustainable Choices: Passengers can select lower-emission options to reduce their carbon footprint.

Driving Airline Efficiency: Transparency incentivizes carriers to implement fuel-saving measures and cleaner technologies.

Supporting Corporate Sustainability: Businesses can track and manage travel-related emissions more effectively.

Accelerating Industry Transition: Standardized data promotes investment in sustainable aviation fuels and efficient aircraft.

Challenges and Future Outlook

While promising, the initiative faces hurdles including expanding airline participation globally, standardizing calculation methods across carriers, and ensuring traveler engagement with emissions data. However, as environmental awareness grows and technology advances, carbon transparency is poised to play an increasingly vital role in aviation's sustainable transformation.
