DHL CMA CGM Partner on Shipping Biofuel Initiative

DHL partners with CMA CGM to reduce shipping emissions using biofuel. Customers can claim these emission reductions through the GoGreen Plus service, with an anticipated reduction of 25,000 tons of CO2 equivalent. This collaboration demonstrates a commitment to sustainable shipping practices and offers a practical solution for businesses seeking to minimize their environmental impact within the supply chain. By utilizing biofuel, DHL and CMA CGM are proactively addressing the need for carbon reduction in the logistics industry and providing a tangible benefit to their customers.

Imagine receiving an online purchase that not only delivers your desired product but also quietly reduces your carbon footprint. This scenario is no longer futuristic fantasy but present reality, as global logistics leader DHL partners with shipping giant CMA CGM to power deliveries with biofuel alternatives.

The Urgent Need for Maritime Decarbonization

The shipping industry accounts for approximately 3% of global CO₂ emissions, a percentage that continues rising alongside international trade growth. Facing mounting environmental pressures, the sector's green transformation has become imperative.

DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM have launched a strategic collaboration to address this challenge. Their agreement will see CMA CGM's vessels powered by biofuels, with the resulting emission reductions passed to DHL customers through its GoGreen Plus service.

"This marks another crucial milestone in building low-carbon supply chains,"

said Casper Ellerbek, Head of Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding. "Sustainable marine fuels help clients achieve climate targets while advancing meaningful industry-wide decarbonization."

Olivier Nivoix, CMA CGM's Executive Vice President for Shipping, emphasized the company's 57% reduction in carbon intensity since 2008. The partnership accelerates their investments in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessel technology.

The "Insetting" Innovation

Unlike traditional carbon offsetting through renewable energy projects, DHL's GoGreen Plus employs an "insetting" model where customers purchase services that directly fund sustainable fuel usage across DHL's operations.

CMA CGM's ACT+ solution complements this approach, leveraging specialized vessels to reduce cargo emissions by 10% to 83% through combined low-carbon fuels and offset mechanisms.

Biofuels: The Green Powerhouse

The collaboration utilizes 8,990 metric tons of UCOME second-generation biofuel derived from waste cooking oil, achieving up to 80% lifecycle emission reductions compared to fossil fuels. This translates to approximately 25,000 tons of CO₂-equivalent reductions - comparable to removing thousands of cars from roads annually.

DHL's Broader Sustainability Vision

This initiative aligns with DHL Group's 2050 net-zero emissions target. By 2030, the company plans to blend sustainable aviation fuel at 30%+ ratios. Recent agreements include a landmark SAF supply contract with Neste for DHL's South Asia hub and prominent green logistics showcases at China's International Import Expo.

Market response has been robust, with over 70,000 Chinese enterprises adopting DHL's green aviation fuel service - the highest adoption rate globally. More than half of DHL Express China's customers now use the service.

China's Green Logistics Landscape

As the world's largest trading nation, China's logistics decarbonization carries global significance. DHL Express China CEO Wu Dongming noted their green solutions represent concrete steps toward China's high-quality development goals.

CMA CGM has concurrently expanded its Chinese bio-methanol infrastructure through a partnership with Shanghai Port Energy, creating synergies for the DHL collaboration's local implementation.
