The United States Postal Service (USPS) is leveraging its extensive last-mile delivery network to help businesses of all sizes get packages to customers faster while reducing logistics expenses. This week, USPS announced it will open access to more than 18,000 Destination Delivery Units (DDUs) to all shippers, significantly enhancing its final-mile delivery capabilities.
The move aims to help retailers and logistics companies achieve quicker deliveries and improve operational efficiency by expanding access to USPS’s last-mile network. DDUs serve as critical nodes in the USPS distribution system, allowing shippers to send packages directly to post offices closer to final destinations, thereby shortening transit times and lowering transportation costs.
By broadening access to its DDU network, USPS seeks to attract more businesses to its services, diversify revenue streams, and strengthen its position in the competitive logistics market. The initiative is expected to particularly benefit small and mid-sized businesses, which often lack the resources to establish and maintain their own last-mile delivery networks.
USPS stated that the expanded program will provide shippers with greater flexibility and control over deliveries, enabling them to better meet growing customer expectations for faster shipping. Additionally, more efficient distribution processes could help reduce carbon emissions, aligning with broader sustainability goals.
