WIPO GREEN Advances Climate Tech for Sustainability

As climate challenges grow increasingly severe, technological innovation has emerged as the key to breakthrough solutions. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has positioned innovation and intellectual property at the heart of sustainable development. Through its WIPO GREEN platform, the organization is accelerating the global transfer and application of green technologies to address climate change.

Focus on Asia-Pacific: Powering Energy Transition

WIPO GREEN's newly released Green Technology Book 2025 Expo Edition turns its focus to the Asia-Pacific region, analyzing its pivotal role in global energy transition. Asia's massive scale, rapid growth, and substantial energy demands position it as a crucial player in worldwide energy transformation.

The comprehensive handbook systematically catalogs mature, emerging, and forward-looking technologies across key sectors including residential and urban communities, public transportation, hospitality and retail, as well as agriculture and fisheries. This special edition made its debut at Expo 2025 Osaka on October 4, drawing significant attention from global stakeholders.

Climate Technology Search (CTS): A Global First

In a major step to improve accessibility of climate technologies, the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) has launched the world's first dedicated climate technology search platform—Climate Technology Search (CTS). This innovative platform employs AI-powered search capabilities to integrate multiple authoritative databases, including WIPO GREEN's technology and needs database, providing users with efficient access to climate solutions.

Whether seeking green technologies in energy, agriculture, or industrial production, CTS offers comprehensive search functionality. The platform was officially unveiled at COP30, marking a significant advancement in global climate technology cooperation.

WIPO GREEN Acceleration: Advancing Sustainability Across Asia

The WIPO GREEN Acceleration Project continues to expand throughout Asia, addressing regional priorities with focus on urban environmental challenges and support for smallholder farmers.

In China, the WIPO GREEN Cities Acceleration Project has successfully implemented six sustainable technologies in Beijing and Shanghai, delivering measurable improvements in energy efficiency and soil health. Additional innovations are being prepared for deployment across more urban centers.

In Laos, the project will continue through 2025, promoting climate-resilient coffee varieties and advocating for reduced pesticide use to support sustainable coffee production. India has seen the deployment of sustainable solutions in rice, corn, and cotton cultivation, effectively reducing emissions while improving resource efficiency and farmer livelihoods.

Indonesia's partnership with WINROCK International is advancing wastewater treatment in palm oil mills, with plans to implement novel composting techniques for palm fruit waste by 2026, driving green transformation in palm oil production.

AI Innovation Streamlines Green Technology Transfer

To enhance user experience, WIPO GREEN's technology and needs database now incorporates AI-generated summaries for PCT patent applications imported from PATENTSCOPE. This innovative feature enables users to quickly grasp complex patent documents' core content and identify key technologies, significantly accelerating the application and transfer of green innovations.

The integration of AI technology has dramatically improved the efficiency of green technology searches, injecting new vitality into global green innovation efforts.

Through its unique platform, WIPO GREEN continues to connect global innovation networks to advance green technology transfer and application. From focusing on Asia-Pacific's energy transition to launching the global CTS platform, implementing acceleration projects across Asia, and leveraging AI capabilities, WIPO GREEN is building a greener, more sustainable future. Collective action remains essential to address climate change and protect our shared planet.
