XPO Logistics Expands Lastmile Delivery Amid Ecommerce Boom

XPO Logistics has completed the construction of eight new “last mile” logistics hubs in North America ahead of the e-commerce peak season, further solidifying its market leadership. This move aims to meet the increasing e-commerce demand by expanding its network and innovating with technology. The goal is to improve the efficiency of heavy goods delivery and enhance the consumer experience. XPO anticipates continued expansion of its hub network to address the ongoing “last mile” challenges presented by e-commerce growth.
XPO Logistics Expands Lastmile Delivery Amid Ecommerce Boom

The holiday season brings excitement for online shoppers worldwide as digital carts fill with everything from furniture to appliances. But behind every "Buy Now" click lies a complex logistics challenge - delivering those bulky purchases safely to your doorstep.

XPO's Strategic Expansion for Peak Season

XPO Logistics recently announced the completion of eight new "final mile" hubs across North America ahead of schedule, strategically positioning itself for Black Friday demand. These facilities in Birmingham, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Savannah, Tulsa and Washington D.C. bring XPO's North American final mile network to 53 hubs, with plans to expand to 85 locations by 2018.

This aggressive expansion directly addresses the booming e-commerce sector's needs. XPO processes over 13 million final mile deliveries annually, with demand particularly surging for heavy goods during peak shopping periods.

Meeting the Heavy Goods Delivery Challenge

XPO has distinguished itself in the complex heavy goods segment, where deliveries require specialized handling:

  • Specialized transportation equipment for bulky items
  • Professional installation services for appliances and furniture
  • Complicated reverse logistics processes for returns

Charlie Hitt, President of XPO's Final Mile division, emphasized the growing impact of e-commerce on final mile logistics, particularly for heavy goods that can't simply be left on a porch.

Chicago Market Expansion

In May, XPO doubled capacity at its Chicago-area Market Distribution Center (MDC) to nearly 100,000 square feet. These MDCs serve as critical nodes in XPO's network, handling:

  • Product receiving and preparation
  • Assembly and installation coordination
  • Reverse logistics management
  • Inventory staging for rapid fulfillment

With 46 MDCs across the U.S., XPO's network now serves 62% of the U.S. population within 75 miles and 77% within 125 miles.

Technology Enhancing Delivery Control

XPO is launching new interactive final mile technology this November designed specifically for heavy goods delivery management. The platform will enable customers to:

  • Track deliveries in real-time
  • Reschedule appointments electronically
  • Receive weather and traffic alerts
  • Set notification preferences

This technology addresses the unique requirements of heavy goods delivery, where recipients typically need to be present for in-home placement.

Future Growth Projections

XPO anticipates 10-15% growth in its heavy goods final mile business over the next 12-18 months. Chief Strategy Officer Scott Malat highlighted the shift from dedicated retail deliveries to e-commerce fulfillment through their hub network as a key growth driver.

As e-commerce continues reshaping consumer behavior, XPO's strategic investments in infrastructure and technology position it to meet the evolving demands of final mile delivery - potentially giving online shoppers one less thing to worry about during their holiday purchases.
