Target Invests 7B in Supply Chain Overhaul

At the CSCMP EDGE conference, Target's Chief Supply Chain and Logistics Officer, Gretchen McCarthy, shared Target's supply chain strategy. This includes a $7 billion investment in stores, the construction of sortation centers, Shipt last-mile delivery, and the application of automation. She emphasized a customer-centric approach, empowering partners, and maintaining supply chain resilience and flexibility to address future challenges. Target aims to optimize its operations to meet evolving customer demands efficiently and effectively.
Target Invests 7B in Supply Chain Overhaul

Target Corporation has emerged as a retail powerhouse by transforming its supply chain into a strategic advantage. The Minneapolis-based retailer, known for its stylish yet affordable merchandise, has invested heavily in supply chain innovations that blend digital convenience with physical store networks.

The $7 Billion Store Transformation

At the core of Target's strategy is a massive $7 billion investment to convert its stores into multifunctional fulfillment hubs. Gretchen McCarthy, Target's Chief Supply Chain and Logistics Officer, explained this approach at the CSCMP EDGE conference in Orlando.

"Seventy-five percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Target store," McCarthy noted. "This proximity allows us to serve customers efficiently through multiple fulfillment options."

The store upgrades include:

  • Redesigned layouts for improved shopping experiences
  • Expanded fulfillment services including Order Pickup, Drive Up, and Same Day Delivery
  • Enhanced employee training programs

The Sorting Center Network

Target is investing $100 million to develop a network of sorting centers, with plans to expand to 15 locations by 2026. These facilities serve as logistical hubs that:

  • Receive packages from 30-40 nearby stores
  • Sort shipments by destination
  • Coordinate with national carriers for final delivery

"This hyperlocal approach increases next-day delivery capacity while reducing transportation costs," McCarthy explained. "It also relieves pressure on store operations by moving sorting activities upstream."

Shipt: The Last-Mile Solution

Target's 2017 acquisition of Shipt has become integral to its delivery network. The subsidiary provides:

  • Real-time routing optimization
  • Flexible driver assignment
  • Efficient same-day delivery

"Thousands of Shipt drivers allow us to offer faster, more convenient delivery options," McCarthy said.

Customer-Centric Supply Chain

Target's supply chain philosophy prioritizes customer experience above all. Mark Baum of FMI noted that this focus creates continuous improvement opportunities.

McCarthy shared an anecdote from a fulfillment center visit: "Our operations director reminds teams that every package represents a customer. This connection between our work and Target's mission - helping families discover joy in daily life - keeps us customer-focused."

Partner Empowerment

Target actively collaborates with partners to streamline operations. Recent initiatives include:

  • Improved trailer forecasting accuracy
  • Reduced inventory management burdens on store teams
  • Enhanced coordination between stores and supply chain

Strategic Automation

While embracing automation for tasks like carton sorting, Target maintains a measured approach. "Automation must solve real problems while complementing - not replacing - our teams," McCarthy emphasized.

Inventory Optimization

Target manages inventory through dual lenses:

  • Physical placement for accessibility
  • Flow efficiency to prevent stagnation

"Maintaining accurate virtual inventory data ensures optimal movement," McCarthy explained. "We constantly evaluate whether we have the right safety stock at the right time."

Building Resilience

Reflecting on pandemic challenges, McCarthy stressed the importance of supply chain visibility and supplier collaboration. "While some macro conditions have improved, we maintain vigilance to ensure flexibility against uncertainties."

Through these interconnected strategies, Target has created a supply chain that combines operational efficiency with customer convenience - a formula that continues to drive its retail success.
