A recent workshop organized by the World Customs Organization has equipped Cameroonian officials and private sector representatives with crucial knowledge about origin rules under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, potentially accelerating economic integration across the continent.
The three-day workshop, held from January 21-23 at Cameroon's National Customs Training Center in Yaoundé, focused on deepening participants' understanding and practical application of rules of origin within the AfCFTA framework. These technical regulations determine a product's economic nationality and directly affect tariff reductions and trade policy implementation.
Experts from the WCO conducted comprehensive training covering all aspects of AfCFTA's origin rules, including their underlying principles, specific provisions, and common operational challenges. Through case studies and group discussions, facilitators broke down complex technical details into accessible concepts while encouraging active participation from attendees.
Participants reported significantly improved comprehension of the regulations, which they said would enhance their ability to facilitate trade between Cameroon and other African nations. The workshop also strengthened collaboration between customs authorities and private sector stakeholders, creating a more cohesive approach to implementing the continental trade agreement.
The event represents part of broader capacity-building efforts by the WCO to support full implementation of the AfCFTA. As trade barriers gradually dissolve across Africa, clear and efficient rules of origin become increasingly vital for ensuring the free trade zone's smooth operation and maximizing its economic potential.
