On November 26, the company laid the foundation for its new smart appliance manufacturing facility in Wuhan's East Lake High-Tech Development Zone, marking another strategic expansion in its intelligent manufacturing ecosystem.
Strategic Manufacturing Hub in Wuhan
The new facility, located east of Zuoling Avenue in the Optical Valley, represents more than simple production capacity expansion. It serves as a crucial component of Xiaomi's "Human-Vehicle-Home" ecosystem strategy. Following the company's automotive super factory and smartphone smart factory, this third intelligent manufacturing base will specialize in the research, development, and production of smart home appliances, particularly air conditioning units, creating a complete product lifecycle from concept to market.
Phase one construction will establish a demonstration production line for smart air conditioners, with trial operations scheduled for November 2025 and full-scale production expected by 2026. This timeline suggests consumers will soon have access to more Xiaomi-developed smart home products.
Technological Innovation in Manufacturing
Unlike conventional manufacturing plants, the Wuhan facility integrates advanced technologies from Xiaomi's smartphone and automotive factories to establish new benchmarks in smart appliance production. The factory will implement artificial intelligence models and big data analytics to enable digital transformation, interconnected systems, and intelligent decision-making—all designed to enhance production efficiency and product quality.
The manufacturing process will employ smart production lines, automated warehousing systems, and real-time data analysis for precision management. Additionally, the facility will house over 100 advanced laboratories to support product innovation and technological development.
Expanding the Optical Valley Ecosystem
Lu Weibing, Xiaomi Group Partner and President of the Mobile Phone Division, emphasized that the Optical Valley serves as the company's home appliance headquarters, demonstrating significant growth in recent years. The new factory will strengthen Xiaomi's industrial presence in the region while contributing to the advancement of China's home appliance sector and the development of the "World Optical Valley."
Beyond the manufacturing facility, Xiaomi plans to establish a 10,000-person R&D center and global headquarters for major appliances in the area, creating a comprehensive industrial chain that integrates research, design, production, and sales. This consolidation aims to optimize resource allocation, enhance innovation capabilities, and improve product offerings.
Academic Partnerships Driving Innovation
To accelerate technological advancement, Xiaomi has entered a strategic cooperation agreement with Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The collaboration will establish joint research centers, smart technology laboratories, and graduate innovation practice bases, creating a new model for industry-academia collaboration. An initial smart appliance experimental center has already commenced operations, marking the first phase of this partnership.
The company's Q3 2024 financial results demonstrated strong performance, with revenue increasing 30.5% year-over-year—marking its strongest quarterly results to date. Notably, air conditioner and washing machine shipments grew 55% and 50% respectively, underscoring Xiaomi's growing influence in the smart appliance market. With the Wuhan factory's upcoming launch, the company appears poised for further expansion in this sector.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi Founder, Chairman and CEO, emphasized that this facility represents the company's third major manufacturing investment following its automotive and smartphone plants, reflecting Xiaomi's continued commitment to intelligent manufacturing and long-term growth.
