Now, X Platform (formerly Twitter) is attempting to disrupt this paradigm. On January 20, Elon Musk announced that X has fully open-sourced its recommendation algorithm, becoming the first major social media platform to take this unprecedented step.
The newly released code employs the same Transformer architecture used in xAI's Grok model and is already operational within X's content recommendation system. Musk acknowledged that the current algorithm remains imperfect, stating there is "room for improvement," but expressed optimism that community collaboration could enhance its performance through collective intelligence.
All source code has been uploaded to GitHub, with plans for quarterly updates. X's recommendation system primarily processes two data streams: posts from accounts users follow and platform-wide content discovery. A Grok-powered ranking model then performs multidimensional predictions on each piece of content, estimating probabilities of user engagement—including likes, replies, retweets, clicks, or views—before generating final rankings. Notably, all predictive capabilities derive from machine learning analysis of authentic user behavior patterns.
This landmark move establishes a new benchmark for algorithmic transparency in social media.
