The latest 2026 Henley Passport Index has revealed the most powerful passports in the world, measuring visa-free access to countries and territories. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport secured the 15th position , granting holders access to 171 destinations without requiring a prior visa—a three-spot improvement from the previous year.
While the Hong Kong government officially lists 174 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations , slightly higher than the index’s count, the upward trend reflects its growing global mobility. The index evaluates passports from 199 countries and territories based on the number of destinations accessible without pre-approved visas, serving as a key benchmark for international travel freedom.
Top Performers and Regional Standings
Singapore retained its top position, while Japan and South Korea tied for second place. Five European nations— Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland —shared third place with 186 visa-free entries each.
Elsewhere in the region, Macau ranked 32nd , while Taiwan placed 33rd . Mainland China climbed one spot to 59th , demonstrating gradual progress despite remaining behind leading nations.
Significance of Passport Strength
The ranking not only reflects a country’s diplomatic influence and global standing but also directly impacts citizens’ travel convenience and international engagement. Enhanced visa-free access fosters business, tourism, and cultural exchanges, reinforcing global connectivity.
As geopolitical dynamics evolve, passport power continues to serve as a critical indicator of a nation’s openness and mobility in an increasingly interconnected world.
