Two Separate Recall Campaigns

The recall involves two distinct batches of vehicles. The first affects 670 ID.4 models from the 2023-2024 model years, where internal electrode misalignment in the high-voltage battery could potentially lead to overheating. Volkswagen has advised owners to limit charging to 80% capacity and park vehicles outdoors as a temporary precaution. The permanent solution will involve replacing affected battery modules.

The second and larger recall encompasses 43,900 ID.4 units from the 2023-2025 model years. These vehicles lack critical software designed to monitor battery abnormalities, which in extreme cases could lead to thermal propagation. Volkswagen plans to address this issue through remote software updates, with some vehicles potentially requiring battery module replacements. The new software will enable real-time battery monitoring and early warning systems for potential risks.

Manufacturing Defect Identified

The batteries in question were supplied by SK Battery America. Investigations have revealed at least five documented cases of battery overheating related to electrode displacement - a clear indication of fundamental manufacturing flaws. Electrode misalignment can cause internal short circuits, potentially leading to dangerous overheating or even fire hazards.

While the ID.4 remains Volkswagen's flagship global electric model, with 2025 sales showing a 26.8% year-over-year increase, the automaker emphasizes that safety takes precedence.
