Gambia Strengthens Border Security to Boost Trade

With the support of the World Customs Organization, Gambia is advancing its coordinated border management program. Through online and offline training, and international exchange cooperation, the country is building a standardized framework and strengthening inter-agency cooperation. The aim is to improve border management capabilities, facilitate trade, and create a safer and more efficient border environment. This initiative ultimately seeks to enhance national competitiveness by streamlining processes and fostering a more secure trade landscape.
Gambia Strengthens Border Security to Boost Trade

Imagine a world where goods clearance no longer involves prolonged waiting but becomes an efficient and streamlined experience. Picture border security not as fragmented efforts but as a cohesive, collaborative safeguard. The Gambia is turning this vision into reality.

With robust support from the World Customs Organization's (WCO) "Accelerate Trade Facilitation" program, The Gambia is vigorously advancing its Border Coordination Management (BCM) initiative. This represents more than mere reform—it's a revolution in border management efficiency, designed to create a safer, more efficient, and competitive trade environment.

Seven-Week Virtual Training + Two-Week On-Site Intensive: Building a Standardized Framework

The Gambia's BCM journey didn't happen overnight. A seven-week virtual workshop laid the foundation for cross-departmental collaboration, resulting in a standardized inter-agency framework. This was followed by a two-week on-site capacity-building program from May 19-30, 2025, where expert teams provided comprehensive guidance on data standardization based on WCO models. These systematic measures established a solid foundation for modernizing The Gambia's border management.

Peer Exchange and Mutual Learning: Creating a New Ecosystem of Cooperation

To further enhance BCM implementation, The Gambia actively participated in international knowledge-sharing. During the project's national liaison meeting in early June 2025, The Gambia exchanged experiences with fellow "Accelerate Trade Facilitation" partner nations including Lesotho, Namibia, and Zambia. This open collaborative approach has accelerated The Gambia's BCM progress.

BCM: A Unified Strategy With Multiple Benefits

Border Coordination Management isn't merely process optimization—it's a strategic, integrated approach to border governance. Its core objectives include streamlining procedures, enhancing security, facilitating trade and personnel movement, while minimizing administrative burdens. The Gambia recognizes BCM as a crucial component of its new border management strategy, understanding that cross-departmental collaboration is essential for both border control efficiency and trade facilitation.

Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner Yankuba Darboe emphasized that The Gambia's BCM approach is built on a comprehensive border management framework incorporating multiple government agencies—including GRA, Immigration, Police, Food Safety and Quality Authority, Standards Bureau, Plant Protection Service, and Health Services. Through coordinated operations, these agencies can effectively address security threats, combat smuggling and illicit trafficking, while facilitating legitimate trade and movement.

Blueprint Complete, Future Promising: Notable Collaborative Achievements

A key outcome of the capacity-building initiative was drafting the final version of an inter-agency standard framework, currently under review by The Gambia's National Trade Facilitation Committee for finalization. Additionally, participating border agencies have streamlined their business processes and compiled over 85% of corresponding datasets to enable coordinated information flow. These achievements establish the foundation for BCM's next phases and closer collaboration among border regulatory bodies.

Deepening Cooperation, Building the Future: The Gambia's Ambitious Vision

The multi-year partnership between GRA and WCO's "Accelerate Trade Facilitation" program enables The Gambia to strengthen inter-agency cooperation on border issues—significantly enhancing national competitiveness and improving the business environment. Program leaders eagerly anticipate continued collaboration with GRA to advance sustainable customs and border reforms. The Gambia is embracing transformation with open arms, welcoming a more prosperous future.

The Gambia's experience demonstrates that Border Coordination Management effectively elevates border governance and facilitates trade. By enhancing inter-agency collaboration and optimizing business processes, The Gambia is creating a more secure, efficient, and open border environment—injecting new vitality into economic development.
