The global logistics giant DHL has made a strategic move to redefine speed, efficiency, and customer satisfaction with a major expansion in Southern California. The company has relocated its Ontario service center to a significantly larger facility, marking not just a change of address but a calculated leap forward in logistics capability.
A $7 Million Investment in Logistics Infrastructure
The new facility spans 75,000 square feet of modern warehouse space with an additional 5,600 square feet of office area. This $7 million investment nearly doubles the size of DHL's previous 39,000-square-foot location in the region. The expansion represents more than physical growth—it signifies enhanced operational capacity and a commitment to supporting business growth in the area.
"This expansion directly reflects our customers' business growth," said John Fox, DHL's Western U.S. regional manager. "The increase in international shipment volumes, particularly driven by e-commerce, necessitated this strategic upgrade."
Inland Empire: A Strategic Logistics Hub
The choice of Ontario in the Inland Empire—a region encompassing Riverside and San Bernardino counties—was deliberate. As the nation's 13th largest metropolitan statistical area, the region offers strategic advantages including robust transportation networks and growing economic activity. Data from the Inland Empire Economic Partnership shows the area is among the fastest-growing in the U.S., with Ontario International Airport experiencing a 15% increase in air cargo volume in 2017 alone.
Enhanced Capabilities for E-Commerce Growth
The new facility addresses two key market drivers: international shipping and e-commerce logistics. With upgraded material handling equipment and expanded warehouse space, the center can now process up to 3,000 pieces per hour—triple its previous capacity. The improvements include:
• Advanced conveyor systems for faster sorting
• Additional loading docks to accelerate throughput
• Comprehensive services handling documents, parcels, and palletized freight
Workforce Expansion and Future Outlook
To support the expanded operations, DHL has added 20 new positions across various functions including operations management, dock workers, and customer service roles. The investment underscores DHL's long-term commitment to the region and positions the company to meet growing logistics demands in the era of global e-commerce.
While challenges such as labor shortages and infrastructure constraints remain, the expansion demonstrates confidence in the Inland Empire's continued growth as a logistics hub. The upgraded facility incorporates sustainable design elements and advanced logistics management systems, preparing for future industry trends toward digitalization and environmental responsibility.
