Old Dominion Opens New Freight Center in Duluth Expands Minnesota Reach

ODFL expands its LTL transportation services by opening a new service center in Duluth, Minnesota. This strategic move aims to enhance operational efficiency and better serve Northern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. The new facility will allow ODFL to provide improved and more reliable LTL services to customers in the region, supporting their supply chain needs and contributing to economic growth in the area.
Old Dominion Opens New Freight Center in Duluth Expands Minnesota Reach

Imagine goods traveling from remote northern Minnesota towns no longer needing circuitous routes but instead reaching their destinations quickly and efficiently. This is no longer a distant dream but a reality made possible by Old Dominion Freight Line's (ODFL) new service center in Duluth.

The less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation leader recently announced the opening of its new Duluth service center, a strategic move that expands ODFL's coverage while bringing unprecedented convenience to shippers across northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

Strategic Importance of Duluth Service Center

The five-acre facility with eight dock doors serves as ODFL's gateway to the Great Lakes shipping region. It directly serves Twin Ports and over a dozen cities across Minnesota and Wisconsin, including Hibbing, Ely, Grand Rapids in Minnesota, and Hayward, Webster, Minong, and Cameron in Wisconsin. Shippers in these areas will now benefit from faster, more reliable LTL transportation services.

The center's location provides ODFL with enhanced access to rail lines and major highways including Interstate 35, US Highway 2, and US Highway 53. This strategic positioning will improve operational efficiency, reduce transit times, and lower transportation costs.

Darek Novak, ODFL's Midwestern regional president, stated: "While we didn't previously have a physical presence in Duluth, we've explored establishing a service center here for years. The demand from customers for our premium services made the Duluth and Superior markets a growth opportunity for us in Minnesota. When the chance arose earlier this year to move into this facility, we seized it without hesitation."

ODFL's Expansion Strategy

The Duluth center marks ODFL's 218th service center nationwide and forms part of the company's $90-$120 million investment in real estate acquisitions and expansion projects this year. Earlier in 2023, ODFL also opened a service center in Benson, Minnesota. These investments demonstrate ODFL's commitment to expanding its service footprint, enhancing operational capacity, and meeting growing customer demand.

Transition From Agency to Direct Service

Prior to establishing the Duluth center, ODFL served the area through agency partners. The new facility allows direct operational control and improved service quality. Novak explained that the center will provide customers with direct service, expanded coverage, enhanced tracking visibility, and reduced transit times.

Key Benefits of the Duluth Facility

  • Expanded Coverage: Direct service to more areas in northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin
  • Faster Transit: Optimized routing leveraging Duluth's strategic location
  • Enhanced Reliability: Reduced risk of cargo loss or damage through direct service
  • Improved Tracking: Real-time shipment visibility through ODFL's advanced system
  • Superior Customer Service: Dedicated professional support team

Economic Impact on Duluth

Beyond transportation benefits, the new center will stimulate Duluth's economy through job creation, increased business investment, and strengthened regional logistics infrastructure. ODFL's presence elevates Duluth's position as a transportation hub while creating new development opportunities.

ODFL's Competitive Advantages

In the competitive LTL market, ODFL distinguishes itself through:

  • Premium service quality
  • Nationwide service network
  • Advanced operational technology
  • Experienced professional team

The Duluth service center represents a significant milestone in ODFL's growth strategy, providing northern Minnesota businesses with efficient transportation solutions while establishing ODFL's presence in the Great Lakes market. As the company continues expanding its network and enhancing service capabilities, it strengthens its position as an LTL industry leader.
