The contractual agreement mandates that all large delivery vehicles, small sprinter vans, and brown package trucks purchased after January 1, 2024, must include factory-installed cabin air conditioning systems. These climate-controlled vehicles will constitute the majority of UPS's 93,000-vehicle fleet moving forward.

Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien emphasized the importance of these protections: "UPS frontline workers power the American economy. In 2023, we secured historic heat protections for our members, and implementing these safeguards cannot face further delays."

Phased Implementation Strategy

The comprehensive installation plan follows a carefully structured timeline:

• Priority upgrades for 5,000 vehicles serving southern and southwestern states will be completed by June 2027

• The first 2,000 vehicles will receive upgrades by June 2026

• A pilot program will evaluate cargo area ventilation systems in 100 vehicles

Additional vehicle modifications include enhanced insulation and improved airflow systems to complement the AC installations.

The path to this agreement wasn't without challenges.
