Royal Canin Supports Female Vets at Asia Veterinary Conference

The 3rd Asian Small Animal Veterinary Specialist Congress highlighted the rising power of women in the pet healthcare industry. Royal Canin empowers veterinary talent development and honors the contributions of women through initiatives like knowledge competitions, specialized courses, and participation in the Magnolia Summit. The industry needs to build a more supportive professional environment to help female veterinarians play a greater role and jointly promote the development of the pet healthcare industry.
Royal Canin Supports Female Vets at Asia Veterinary Conference

When you walk into a veterinary clinic with your beloved pet, chances are you'll be greeted by a gentle, attentive female veterinarian. This is no coincidence. Data shows that women now comprise more than half of professionals in the pet healthcare industry. The question then becomes: how can we better empower this growing "her power" to advance veterinary medicine?

The Emergence of Female Leadership in Pet Healthcare

The 2022 China Pet Healthcare Industry White Paper reveals that women account for 55% of professionals in veterinary clinics. This statistic clearly demonstrates that women have become indispensable pillars of China's pet healthcare sector. Beyond their professional expertise, women veterinarians have earned pet owners' trust through their unique patience, attention to detail, and empathy.

To celebrate this influential female presence, the recent 3rd Asia Small Animal Veterinary Conference in Wuxi, Jiangsu province featured the inaugural Mulan Summit focused on women in veterinary medicine. Breaking from traditional formats, the summit was entirely organized and presented by women, featuring an innovative relay-style presentation format that showcased female professionals' profound insights and leadership.

Personal Journeys: From Pet Owners to Professionals

Among the notable speakers was Ms. Chen Shu, Corporate Affairs Director of Royal Canin China, who shared her personal story in a presentation titled "My Journey of Love: From Pet Owner to Professional." Drawing from her dual perspective as both a long-time pet owner and industry professional, she discussed her commitment to feline and canine welfare.

Ms. Chen emphasized her focus on precise nutritional care for pets, while also highlighting her collaborative work in stray animal rescue, responsible pet ownership education, and building sustainable industry ecosystems. Her presentation resonated strongly with attendees, reflecting shared experiences among women in the field.

Supporting Veterinary Education and Specialization

Despite significant progress in veterinary education, the industry continues to face challenges in developing highly skilled professionals. Addressing this need, Royal Canin has partnered with academic institutions and industry organizations to launch initiatives like the second annual "Royal Cup" National Vocational College Pet Nutrition Knowledge Competition.

The competition finals, held during the conference, combined knowledge assessment, clinical skills, and interactive challenges to create a platform for aspiring veterinarians. After rigorous selection processes, 37 students from 24 vocational colleges participated in the finals, engaging with experts through various formats including theoretical debates and practical demonstrations.

Additionally, Royal Canin provided specialized clinical nutrition courses during the event, where experienced practitioners shared nutritional management strategies for common small animal diseases and real-world case studies, aiming to enhance veterinarians' clinical capabilities through precision nutrition knowledge.

Advancing Gender Equity in Veterinary Medicine

Women veterinarians bring distinct advantages to the profession, including enhanced communication skills, greater attention to detail, and stronger empathetic abilities—qualities particularly valuable in feline medicine and establishing client relationships. However, they also face unique challenges, including work-life balance pressures and traditional gender stereotypes about physical demands in veterinary practice.

The industry is now focusing on creating more supportive environments through measures like flexible scheduling, professional development opportunities, and initiatives promoting gender equality. These efforts aim to retain talented women in the field and enable their career advancement.

As the pet healthcare sector continues to evolve, the growing influence of women professionals promises to shape its future direction—emphasizing compassionate care, scientific rigor, and innovative approaches to animal welfare. This transformation reflects broader societal changes while addressing the specific needs of pets and their owners in an increasingly pet-friendly world.
